The wife and I are heading to Kauffmann Stadium over Labor Day weekend....(Friday and Saturday night games) any advice or insight? Parking? Is there tailgating? Where to sit? Food and drinks to try? Hotels close by?

Thanks,

We did KC a few years ago and stayed at the Holiday Inn Kansas City CoCo Key water park which is right across the interstate from the ballpark. In fact, we could see Kauffmann from our window. The water park was lackluster but we did not spend much time there. The hotel otherwise was fine.

They allowed tailgating at the game and since we got there early enough, they let us park on the grass under a tree at the edge of the lot. It was sweet.

The BBQ at Gates was awesome.

We had also asked at the desk for a local pizza recommendation and were told that Funhouse Pizza was a local institution. Avoid this place - it was undoubtedly the worst pizza I've ever had. We did not even take the leftovers back to the hotel.

If you can squeeze in a visit to the Negro League Museum it is highly recommended.

Yes, absolutely the Negro Leagues Museum. If you are into cemeteries (some people are, some aren't), the Forest Hills Cemetery has not only the gravesites of Buck O'Neill and Satchel Paige (whose tombstone fits with his personality) but also a separate monument to Buck O'Neill.

For BBQ, Arthur Bryant's has a great rep though I didn't make it there personally. I did eat at Danny Edwards and it was fantastic.

The Royals Museum/Hall of Fame in the stadium is very comprehensive. I would try to get in there before the game if possible. We missed 2 innings of the game, I think. Worth checking out.

Kauffmann Stadium is in the middle of nowhere. You don't want to stay anywhere near there. There's plenty of parking at the stadium and people tailgate even for baseball. I went to a day game and I'd recommend sitting in the shade if you're going during the day. If you're going at night, just sit somewhere along the first and third base line. You'll get a good view of the fountains from there. Make sure to check the Royals Hall of Fame museum and they even have mini golf at the stadium.

This is late as we just got home from the trip. We caught the Royals/Rangers game on the 1st of Sept after going to a Cardinals game. We stayed at Drury Inn and Suites that is just across the freeway from the park - a 15 minute walk and free parking. Plus they offer free evening food and drinks to load up before the game. The free hot breakfast is also amazing. Hope you had a good time, we certainly did.
