Wow - what a horrible end to the 2014 season. With only 2 September wins on 9/16, the team implosion appears to be complete.
All year, fans have readily blamed Frank Wren (rightfully so) for the failures of the Dan Uggla and BJ Upton deals. What I have not heard is criticism for the void in leadership in the clubhouse. Last year, the decision was made to let McCann and Hudson go. This is a common move to get younger and to cut payroll. However, the move eliminated the leaders on the team. Can anyone forget the leadership McCann showed when confronting the Brewers' Carlos Gomez and blocking his path to the plate on a home run. Agree or disagree with the move, that was leadership. Freeman and Johnson were fuming at Gomez, but it was McCann who stood up and did something about it.
This year's Braves have been sliding the entire second half of the season and nearly non-stop since the winless west coast swing. The team needed someone to stand up in the clubhouse and show verbal leadership.
The team is turning the page with the ground breaking of the new stadium today. It is also time to turn the page in the front office. Mr. Wren, thank you for your efforts as Braves GM. I wish you the best in your future career, and hope that future career begins shortly.
