I'm sitting here enjoying Major League, which I always find myself digging out at this time of year. The fact that I'm heading to Cleveland in April makes the movie that much more fun. There've been countless posts over the years about which baseball movie is the best. Which one is your favorite? Which one is the most realistic? Who's the best baseball actor in a movie? Really the list goes on and on. The thing I've really noticed over the years though is that TV is missing a giant opportunity. Reading Ball Four and McCarthy's (Single-A Angels player) Odd Man Out, a show dedicated to baseball would have to be a hit. I know what you may be thinking -- They made that two years ago, it was called "Clubhouse". Ugh, that show was terrible. Why they thought that centering a baseball show around a teenage kid in a baseball clubhouse was a good idea is anyone's guess.
Baseball would be a great sitcom. The trials of the road, the pranks, the debauchery. You could just as easily put in the "thoughtful" episodes that deal with drugs, divorce, or struggling on the field. The problem with Clubhouse is that they treated it like an afterschool special. It was too sterile and forced, and no adult baseball fan is going to connect with a show centered around a ballboy. A combination of The Office, with a little Two And A Half Men humor and rapport, and you'd have a fun show!
