Hit my 30th and 31st parks two weeks ago in Texas. (Now at 26 of the current 30). Also drove by the old Astrodome, but couldn't get close enough for detailed pictures. Immense security around Reliant Park for some reason.
Minute Maid Park
Went to two games at MMP. Luckily I managed to get one game with the roof open and another with the roof closed. The difference is night/day. Basically two different parks.
For my first game, the weather was gloomy and very hot/humid. With that, the roof was closed. Inside with the roof closed its dark and somewhat gloomy. The crack of the bat seems to echo off of the steel roof creating an odd sound. The roof is a necessity though. Even in April, the heat and humidity are opressive and would make watching a game uncomfortable.
However two days later with clear skies and a cool 70 degrees the roof was open for my 2nd game. That day I managed to take a tour as well (thanks to Steven of the MMP Tours dept.) to get a look at alot of the places you don't normally get to see with "regular" tickets. The open roof really brightens up the park, also with glass beyond left field retracated you get a great look at some of the downtown Houston buildings.
New for 2011 is a MASSIVE video board in right field. I think it may even be bigger than the one in new Yankee Stadium.
Rangers Ballpark in Arlington
Between the two games in Houston we took the 4 hour drive up I-45 to Dallas/Arlington.
Rangers Ballpark has terrific details on the exterior. Longhorn heads, lone stars, and "bas relief" murals intertwine with the brick arches perfectly. Once on the inside, you notice some great details in the concourses. Lots of steel arches (again lone stars) and very wide walkways.
It was a very nice place to see a game on a warm April night, but I'd imagine a game on a 100 degree July day may be really uncomfortable.
Astrodome
I really wanted to get a close up look at the old Astrodome in Houston. Unfortunately, the security for the Reliant Stadium guard the place like Fort Knox. I was really only able to get "drive by" pics from the surrounding streets. From a quick glance, the old dome seems like its falling apart and probably doesn't have long before it goes the way of Shea/Tiger/Yankee etc.
