What about Winter?!

A coworker of mine, who I should say has no imagination, nor creativity are talking and I mention this site.  He asks me what I am going to do when the season ends. Will I keep talking baseball? He is a Met fan but only when they're winning and doesn't really follow sports.

Honestly, there are excactly three things I can talk about, everyday, all day, all the time. Excactly three. Baseball being number two. So, to answer his question, no, I will not talk about baseball in the off season, unless its something interesting, like a trade or a new ballpark or I got my Nationals tickets! etc. I don't follow basketball, football or hockey so I am not traveling in the winter.  Besides, my job and finances won't allow me.  But he asks me what is so special about ballpark chasing, and I tell him that is mainly a hobby and my love for the game.  Besides what's so good about an indoor arena?  Other then the exterior or the building, they all look the same.  I know that all ballparks have a same layout and are all played in the same diamond shape, but they are all different.  You can't tell me that AT&T Park looks like the Sky-dome...no.

So, that was something I wanted to share with my ballpark buddies, feel free to comment.

In the off-season I do try to follow the fall leagues in Arizona, also the Dominican League. You are right, though, a tough slog! Reading books about baseball, and devouring the next season's schedule for planning ballpark trips takes up some hobby time.

For myself, there is nothing like baseball season! With that being said, I do follow football and basketball so it does make the winter months seem to go by quicker. I agree with Diane that it is good to take time off from things you love--it makes the heart grow fonder!

I would say most active chasers are busy dreaming and planning their following season ballpark trips during the off season.

What are your other two subjects?

As far as winter, I do feel a little bummed about it sometimes.  Between the shorter days and no baseball, November-February is less fun.  I figured out that going to Spring Training eases the winter blues.  Although, as you mentioned, that is money and vacation time that is can't be used during the regular season.

I think, in general, though, it's best to have time off, even from great things.
